Turning reviews into reels: On-site video built from what residents actually say

HeyNeighborly's content team is building on-site shotlists from real resident review themes, so community video sounds like the people who live there.

The best lines in a community video usually aren't written by a marketer. They're written by residents, in their reviews. So that's where HeyNeighborly's content team is starting.

This isn't a how-to. It's a look at work in flight: on-site shoots built from what residents actually say.

The idea: let reviews write the shotlist

Most on-site shoots start with an amenity checklist. Pool, gym, lobby, model unit. That footage looks nice and sounds like everyone else.

We're flipping the order. Before a shoot, our team reads the community's public reviews and pulls out the themes residents keep coming back to: a friendly leasing team, a space they love using, the feel of the neighborhood. Those themes become shots.

What that looked like this month

In mid-October, our content team put together a shotlist for an on-site shoot that worked reviews-style content directly into the plan. The team reviewed it together before the visit, and agreed to keep review reels in a consistent style across the community's feed so they read as a series, not one-offs.

The shoot happened the next day. Our creator covered most of the shotlist, found the leasing team welcoming, and adapted on the fly when an amenity space suited the moment better than the plan did. Notes and footage are now moving into edit.

⚡ Why built-from-reviews video works

  • It sounds like residents. Because the themes came from residents, the video echoes their language instead of brochure copy.
  • It's honest. We film what people already praise, so the content matches what a prospect will find in reviews.
  • It reinforces search. When video, captions and review replies all describe the same real strengths, the story about a community stays consistent everywhere a renter (or their AI assistant) looks.
  • It's repeatable. A consistent reel style turns each shoot into part of an ongoing series.

What we're watching next

As these reels go live, we're paying attention to which resident themes resonate, and feeding that back into the next shotlist. Reviews tell us what to film. Engagement tells us what to film more of.

FAQ

Do you quote residents' reviews in the video?

We build from the themes residents raise. The point is to reflect what they value, not to put words in anyone's mouth.

Does this replace amenity footage?

No. Amenities still matter. Reviews help decide which ones to feature and how to frame them.

Who handles the shoot?

HeyNeighborly's content team plans the shotlist, coordinates with the site team, and handles the shoot and edit.

The takeaway: residents already wrote your best script. We're just filming it.
